Description
GELINA is a neutron time-of-flight facility installed at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel (Belgium), dedicated to neutron-induced cross section measurements for more than 50 years. GELINA’s experimental program focusses on nuclear applications and is strongly connected to the JEFF project. Measurements of the most relevant partial cross sections (capture, elastic, inelastic and fission) as well as total cross sections can be performed, with the experimental setups undergoing regular modernization. The resulting data, mainly in the resolved and unresolved resonance region, feed into evaluations that are performed either in-house or by collaboration partners.
During the last years efforts focused on developing experimental and analytical (procedures and software) tools to produce and validate evaluated nuclear data. A transmission station has been equipped with an industrial furnace for measurements with samples at high temperature, allowing the study of Doppler broadening effects. Other experimental activities include integral experiments in high-intensity radiation fields inside the GELINA target hall and measurements at a dedicated transmission station to validate resonance parameter files. Improved data analysis procedures allow now for accurate transmission measurement of “fuel pins” used in MINERVE integral experiments and software tools allow for a simple comparison of (thick sample) transmission data with evaluated data libraries.
To broaden the experimental programme an electron beam line to produce bremsstrahlung for investigating gamma-induced reactions is being commissioned.
Most of the work has been performed together with collaboration partners, many of which were participating in the EUFRAT open-access program, a program open to researchers from EU Member States, candidate and associated countries.
