2026 Internship Training Projects (complete)

Project Summaries

1. Understanding of element abundances in the Universe (Nuclear Astrophysics)

Title: Experimental studies of nuclear reactions to understand astrophysical processes.

 Advisor: A.Spyrou

 Topic: Nuclear Astrophysics, Experiment

Summary: Study nuclear physics properties that drive stellar evolution and element production. Projects include detector development, data analysis, or theoretical calculations related to nucleosynthesis. Report

AWARDED: Tudor-Stefan MARIAN, Institut Polytechnique de Paris

2. Ultra-cold regime for Symmetry Tests (Precision Metrology)

Title: Centrifuge decelerator of radioactive molecules & atoms for fundamental symmetry tests.

 Advisor: X.Wu

Topic: Fundamental Symmetry Tests, Experimental Development

Summary: Develop a unique centrifuge decelerator and electromagnetic trap to slow radioactive atoms/molecules to the ultracold regime. This enables high-precision spectroscopy of superheavy species like Radium or Thorium.

3. Precision Spectroscopy with lasers for New Physics (Fundamental Symmetries)

Title: Precision laser spectroscopy of ThO molecules for testing fundamental symmetries.

 Advisor: X.Wu

 Topic: Precision Spectroscopy, Experimental Development

Summary: Develop the laser and optics systems and vacuum beamline for precision spectroscopy on cold Thorium Monoxide molecules. The goal is to set stringent constraints on time-reversal violating new physics beyond the Standard Model.

4. Nucleon transfer reaction and uncertainty (Nuclear Theory)

Title: Constraining alpha-fusion rate with alpha-transfer data.

 Advisor: F.Nunes & C.Hebborn

 Topic: Nuclear Astrophysics, Uncertainty Quantification

Summary: Analyze transfer reaction data (to) using nuclear reaction models and Bayesian statistics to quantify uncertainties. The results will constrain the critical fusion rate. Report

AWARDED: Elouan BOUCHERON, University Of Caen

5. Emulators to speed up nuclear computation (Theoretical Modeling)

Title: Development of surrogate models for expensive calculations

 Advisor: P.Giuliani & K. Godbey

 Topic: Machine Learning, Emulators, Computation

Summary: Develop surrogate models (emulators) for complex numerical calculations using dimensionality reduction techniques. The goal is to speed up computations in areas like nuclear structure, reactions, or astrophysics.

6. Nuclei at and beyond the Dripline (Analysis of Experimental Data)

Title: Study of phenomena arising along the neutron dripline.

 Advisor: P. Gueye & A. Revel

 Topic:  Experimental Analysis/Simulation

Summary: Support the MoNA collaboration's study of nuclei at and beyond the neutron dripline. Work involves a primary project on target design and a secondary project assisting with offline analysis/post-tests for 2026 experiments.
