The FRIB-TA Summer School: Practical Uncertainty Quantification and Emulator Development in Nuclear Physics will be held at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, MI USA, on June 26-28 2023.
Uncertainty quantification is a crucial aspect of the theory-experiment cycle, a fact that is particularly true at laboratories like FRIB that have broad research interests spanning from fundamental symmetries through the role and origin of nuclei in the cosmos. Accounting for the many sources of uncertainty coming from different theoretical models, simulations, and measurement errors from multiple types of experiments represents a challenging statistical problem and can become a major computational burden.
In this summer school, we will address how uncertainty quantification can be integrated into nuclear physics at every level from theoretical modeling and simulations, to experimental analysis and control. Parts of the discussions will focus on use of emulators, such as Gaussian processes and reduced order modeling, to help reduce the computational burden of nuclear physics calculations and Bayesian estimation. We will place a strong focus on practical implementation of the discussed tools and ideas, structuring it in a way to maximize the impact across a wide spectrum of coding expertise levels among the attendees. The lectures will act as a solid foundation of knowledge and will be accompanied by hands-on tutorial sessions walking through an implementation of each topic.
The attendees will be encouraged to form teams and tackle a short project which will be started during the summer school. The organizers will propose sample projects that are accessible to participants of every level, though ambition and originality will be encouraged. The final product of the summer school will be an edited compendium of all the projects that have been completed into a single online resource, which will be made public.

The Summer School is organized by the FRIB Theory Alliance. For selected participants we hope to provide partial support which may include lodging and meals. After registration has closed you will be contacted with the support we are able to provide. We will not provide support for transportation expenses.
